What is Dragonfire?

Dragonfire is South Africa's oldest roleplaying convention, run by CLAWs, the student roleplaying society at the University of Cape Town. Dragonfire 2004 is being held on the long weekend of August 7 - 9.

Dragonfire is a games convention attended by roleplayers, wargamers, cardgamers and science fiction and fantasy fans from all over South Africa. As the oldest convention of its kind in South Africa, it is well-respected as a source of new roleplaying material (contributors write the games played at the convention).

SA Book Trade: We typically receive sponsorship from overseas publishers of roleplaying game books, but this year we are also interested in approaching local publishers/distributors to promote their books (eg, novels of interest to science fiction, fantasy and graphic novel readers, particularly those you are wanting to promote in August).

What is the benefit to sponsors?

We include sponsor logos on our website, posters and brochures. We identify sponsors at our prize-giving parties. Our sponsors have earned an excellent reputation amongst our attendees, and therefore amongst roleplayers in South Africa.

Book trade sponsors will be pleased to know that their contact, David Seaward, has had experience in the trade and can be guaranteed to enthusiastically tout hot authors, latest releases and the like.

What are the prizes for?

Team prizes are awarded to groups who solve puzzles and play their characters enthusiastically. Individual prizes are awarded to Game Masters who create exciting stories and engage their players.

Each module has one team prize (awarded to four team members) and one GM prize (awarded to one Game Master). There are six modules planned, listed at the top of the page.

What prizes are you looking for?

It is up to the publisher to determine how to make up the prize pack, remembering that there is a group prize for four players, and an individual Game Master prize.

SA Book Trade: We haven't previously had book trade sponsorship (as opposed to game book publishers), so we are open to suggestions as to prize-pack make up. Here are our thoughts:

GM's prize (suggestion)

  • two/three new release hardcovers
  • an as-yet-unpublished proof copy(*)

(*) I'm remembering what an event it was to get my hands on a proof copy of Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife, Neil Gaiman's Coraline, or Jonathan Stroud's Amulet of Samarkand before they came out - our attendees are the kind of people who would appreciate being "ahead of the pack" on new titles like these - and likely to buy "real" copies when they come out

Team prize (suggestion)
(identical items divided between four team members)

  • four new release hardcovers
  • four new release softcovers

Miscellaneous prizes (spot prizes)

  • t-shirts/mugs/posters/other promotional material

(In some cases promotional material may be coveted more than books, and be more appropriate for team or GM prizes, depending on availability.)

What books are you looking for?

SA Book Trade: Science fiction, fantasy and horror would be appropriate genres. Graphic novels would also be appropriate. We have included brief descriptions of each of the modules if you would like to select titles that tie in well (if you have queries on any of them, let us know).

The theme for this year's Dragonfire is "Innocence", so children's fantasy titles would also tie in well. As our attendees are 18 years and older these should be mature-theme children's books along the lines of the Amulet of Samarkand (Jonathan Stroud), Harry Potter (JK Rowling), Sabriel (Garth Nix) - rather than "kiddies" titles.
