Up the stairs, closer, soon...
Adam Higgins sat at his antique Californian redwood desk, studying the plasma screen of his desktop with intent. The formal dinner he had hosted had just ended, and he needed to tie up a few loose "administrative" issues before he retired for the night. Natalie had insisted on staying, but Adam refused point-blank, shut her up gently and sent her to sleep. The bluish glow of the screen lit up his otherwise dark study, illuminating the spines of the rows of archaic books that lined the shelves behind him; a glass of dinner's remaining merlot sat beside the screen. His exquisite leather chair squeaked slightly as he shifted his seating position and reached for some printouts that lay on his right.

The printouts were stock exchange reports, but Adam had scribbled notes and made a few lines on them. It seemed as if his "portfolio" was doing very well, and he smiled at his own achievement and sense of progress. His name was becoming widespread and well-known, even among the public, he had prestigious contracts being lined up, he had all his contingencies in place, and all his ducks in a row. Alex Abel had better watch his back, although he secretly hoped Abel wouldn't see him coming...
